What are the Different Stone Sealers?
As a professional Masonry Contractor, I have had clients who want to draw out the beautiful colors of stone flooring or countertops. They may like the look of the stone better when it is wet or damp. This is where Color Enhancers fit in. But there are two types, and each has a specific advantage over the other.
Impregnators are my First Choice, as they are Penetrating Sealers that soak into the pores of the stone, rather than lying on the surface. This process is often preferred as it is less likely to be damaged by traffic or by objects or furniture scratching the coating of topicals. Impregnators generally require less maintenance.
Topical Sealers are often required if you wish to alter the finish as well as enhancing the color. An example would be adding a sheen or shine to a stone that has a naturally dull or matte finish. This is where a topical sealer may be more suitable. Topical Sealers are also a good choice for heavily textured stone that is difficult to clean due to the deep crevices in the stone. Topicals can fill the deep pores to help make it easier for regular cleaning.
Combination is the option that is appropriate when you want a very Deep Color Enhancment AND add a Sheen or Shine in the appearance. You would choose the Impregnator suited for your project, then apply the Topical Sealer on top to achieve your desired finish.
Even though our products are Professional Grade, they can be applied by homeowners just as easily as painting a wall. Impregnators should be applied with a quality brush suitable for solvents, or paint pad. While Topical Sealers are most often applied using our Sealer Applicator Brush to get a quality finish.
IMPREGNATORS
EXTERIOR COLOR ENHANCING - S242 Color Enhancer
Reduces penetration of water and dirt on polished, honed or textured finishes. Enhances color. Solvent based, for use on Interior and Exterior stone.
HMK® S422 is a ready to use solvent based impregnator for use on all natural stone surfaces (soft and hard), agglomerates, reconstituted stone and terrazzo, and can be used on polished, honed and textured surfaces. By reducing water and dirt penetration, regular maintenance is facilitated. Algae, fungus and other problems occurring with exterior installations are reduced. Color enhancement will bring out the grain and structure of the stone. HMK® S42 is especially suited for wall and floor surfaces. Vapor permeation is only slightly diminished. Please note that HMK® S42 is not effective against oil and grease. For exterior and interior use.
ADVANCED COLOR ENHANCING - S244 COLOR ENHANCER-EXTRA
Solvent base color enhancing impregnator. For use on all natural stone surfaces. Reduces penetration of water, dirt, oil and grease. For interior and exterior use.
HMK® S244 is a ready to use special solvent based color enhancing impregnator for use on natural and artificial stones, reconstituted stone, and terrazzo. It reduces the penetration of water, dirt, oil and grease, as liability to dirt and stains is significantly reduced and subsequent cleaning is made much easier. The level of resistance to water, oil and grease varies depending upon the permeability of the surface. HMK® S44 significantly enhances the color and structure of the treated surface. The more product absorbed into the surface, the better the repelling and color enhancing effect.
TOPICAL SEALERS
MATTE FINISH STONE SEALER
Modified silicone/acrylic base sealer that produces a tough, hard, and highly protective finish. For interior and conditional exterior use on honed and textured mineral surfaces. Not for use in wet areas.
HMK® S235 is a ready to use color enhancing surface sealant that reduces the penetration of water, dirt and grease into honed, brushed, sandblasted, flamed and riven soft and hard natural stone surfaces, agglomerates, concrete and terrazzo. The color and structure of the surface will be enhanced while leaving a matte finish. HMK® S235 is UV resistant, and slip retardant. Facilitates regular cleaning and overall maintenance, especially on rough and textured surfaces.
Modified silicone/acrylic base sealer that produces a tough, hard, and highly protective Satin Sheen finish. For use on interior honed and textured mineral surfaces.
HMK® S237 is a ready to use color enhancing surface sealant that reduces the penetration of water, dirt and grease into honed, brushed, sandblasted, flamed and riven soft and hard natural stone surfaces, agglomerates, concrete and terrazzo. The color and structure of the surface will be enhanced while leaving a satin finish. HMK® S237 is UV resistant and slip retardant. Facilitatesregular cleaning and overall maintenance, especially on rough and textured surfaces. For internal use only.
HIGH GLOSS STONE SEALER
Modified silicone/acrylic base sealer that produces a tough, hard, and highly protective High Gloss finish. For use on interior honed and textured stone surfaces.
HMK® S239 is a ready to use color enhancing surface sealant that reduces the penetration of water, dirt and grease into honed, brushed, sandblasted, flamed and riven soft and hard natural stone surfaces, agglomerates, concrete and terrazzo. The color and structure of the surface will be enhanced while leaving a high gloss finish. HMK® S239 is UV resistant. Facilitates regular cleaning and overall maintenance, especially on rough and textured surfaces.
